How and when do I use foliar fertilisers?

Foliar fertilisers are an effective way to give your plants an extra boost of nutrients. Here are some tips on how to do it right:

  • Timing: It is best to spray the plants in the early morning or late evening when the air is cool and humid. This way the leaves absorb the nutrients better. Avoid spraying in the heat or before rain.
  • Weather conditions: Avoid windy weather so that the fertiliser is not blown off the plants. It is best to spray when the air is calm.
  • Plant condition: Make sure the plants are well moistened before spraying. This will help them to absorb the fertiliser better. If the plants are stressed due to lack of water, the effectiveness of the fertiliser is reduced.
  • Solution and equipment: Use solutions with a pH of around 5.0 and add surfactants to help the droplets to cover the leaves better. Standard spraying equipment is well suited for this job.
  • Full coverage: It is important that each leaf receives its portion of fertiliser. Spray so that the entire crown of the plant is covered.

Tip: Pay attention to the spray nozzles. Density nozzles cover the entire plant area, but they should be selected according to the flow rate and speed. This will ensure an even distribution of fertiliser and maximum fertilisation efficiency.

Foliar feeding is a great way to quickly give plants extra nutrients, but remember that it is only a supplement to the main nutrition.
